Community News
The
Community Office acts as the central
point for any enquiries regarding activities or events being staged
at Hodgson School. There is always more than plenty happening at
this thriving school, which has around 1,155 students.
The school is currently the highest performing comprehensive school
in the Wyre and Fylde area and was also judged as ‘outstanding’ by
Ofsted inspectors in September 2008. We want to share what makes the
school a success for students with our wider community.
Read on to find out more about what Hodgson has to offer its
community, which includes:
• Adult education courses
• Poulton Music School
• Premises available to hire
We pride ourselves as being at the heart of
the learning community for Poulton-le-Fylde and the surrounding
area. There is a range of adult education courses on offer here at
Hodgson, which are run in partnership with further education
providers Myerscough College and the Adult College Lancaster. See
below for up-to-date details.
Elderly residents at two Poulton sheltered housing schemes are
benefiting from free ICT training, thanks to Hodgson. Basic PC and
Internet skills are being taught to residents of Burlington House
and Elizabeth Court on Tuesday afternoons. And student volunteers
are helping Community ICT Technician Mr Noel to deliver these weekly
training sessions.
The school has also donated an Internet-ready computer, which is a
permanent fixture in the residents’ lounge at Burlington House, on
Queensway.
There is a well-established private lettings service, which sees the
school’s sports facilities hired by local teams, groups and
individuals. Various other rooms are available for hire, also at
very competitive rates. Young musicians, from across the Fylde, are
tutored at the Poulton Music Centre, which is staged at the school
on Saturday mornings (term time only).
Hodgson is a focus for community activity, and will continue to
build upon the strong working partnerships that have been forged
with a number of local primary schools, further education providers,
community groups and businesses. In July 2006, Hodgson and Baines
High School, Poulton, publicly announced the forging of a new era of
collaboration. Both schools are working together more closely to
maximise potential, whilst at the same time still retaining their
individual identities. The ultimate aim is to improve the life
chances of all young people in both schools by working together in a
positive partnership. The first joint project to be launched by the
schools, in autumn 2006, was a national vocational lifestyle course
(ASDAN) at Key Stage 4 (for Years 10 and 11).

Community Office Update
• The Adult College Lancaster is currently offering FREE courses
that are open to all adults, here at Hodgson. Skills for Life
classes, run on Wednesdays between 6.30pm-9pm, help students to
improve their Maths or English. Those who complete the course can
gain a national certificate at either Level 1 or 2 in Literacy or
Numeracy. New sessions will run through the autumn term. Call the
Community Office to enrol on 01253 881178.
• The Summer edition of the school’s magazine, Hodgson Highlight, is
now available. This is another good way of keeping up-to-date with
everything going on at the school. It can be viewed via this website
or free copies are available from the school’s reception.
